Writing on the Wall II

Writing on the Wall II

from $70.50

Writing on the Wall II was completed in 2004. This was a time of intense travel for my art, but also a time of major reconnection with my family from Pittsburgh. I was staying with my cousin, who was like a big sister and mother figure, to do the Three Rivers Arts Festival. She is the daughter of my mothers’ sister. My mother moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh to marry my father. We did not see my Pittsburgh family often, but I had very fond memories of the times we did get to visit. I found out that my mother was terminally ill while at my cousins’ house. I was devastated, but dragged myself through the show. This event marked the beginning of reconnection to my mothers’ family, and brought healing and support I truly needed. I have returned several times a year since, regaining connection to my mother. When I look at this piece now, I see Pittsburgh. I see the Andy Warhol bridge, I see cars, tires, hills filled with homes piled upon them. I see the colors and excitement of the Arts Festival, I see construction. I see my mothers’ home. I see where my great grandmother was an indentured servant. I see my ancestors, my heritage.
